before president obama. i grew up in the party of ronald reagan. i worked for him for two years and i know what he thought. i knew he had a commitment even though he was very conservative. he voted right for the country even though he had a conservative image. i worked for the george shuttles and george herbert walker bush. that's the republican i am. what happened in the last few years, the party shifted dramatically to the right. that's acceptable, but if you stay that far to the right, you lose the country because the country is moving more towards the center. there is a demographic change. we will be a minority majority country. we can't say we will fix the message. you have to appeal to policies and the programs of the people. >> this transformation you would like to say that you think the party needs to survive, do you think that organizations like the nra are impeding that transformation from happening? >> the nra and others who are gun control advocates have to take a look at what they have been doin

president obama plans to introduce legislation next week, calling for the biggest changes to gun laws this country has seen in two decades. yesterday, the president surrounded by children, who wrote him letters after newtown, urged congress to take action on a number of proposals, including universal background checks for anyone buying a gun, restoring the ban on military-style assault weapons and limiting magazines to ten rounds. giving law enforcement additional tools to prosecute gun crimes and improving the mental health system for young people. >> so let's look at all of those items up there. richard wolffe, every one of them has overwhelming support of the american people. universal background checks. 85% of americans support that. restoring a ban on military-style assault weapons. that's a 60/40 proposition now. limiting magazines to ten rounds. almost 7 in 10 americans support that. additional tools for law enforcement. you know that's got to be an 80/20, 90/10 issue. the same with improving mental health services. i bring these issues up only to say, once again, my republican

because john boehner didn't have a relationship with barack obama. when barack obama got on "meet the press" sunday morning and said yeah, we'll make adjustments to how we pay out social security. and then harry reid in the afternoon said no, we're not going to, if john boehner had a relationship like tip o'neill had a relationship with ronald reagan, they'd pick up the phone and say listen, here's the deal. i'll bring you the votes you need, but listen, you're going to have to tell harry reid to back off. okay, mr. president? we're not going to show you up. you said it this morning on "meet the press." we need that. give me that, and we'll get a vote on the floor and we'll pass this thing. but instead, there was no relationship. so they talked past each other. it was shortsighted and ended up costing taxpayers a lot of money over the next 10, 20 years. >> mika, those were forced meetings just behind the very top of the leadership ladder. what we're talking about is bringing together the constituent members on a monthly basis so they can have dialogu
